Monday, 18 May - Day 50

Today, Emilie and I are going to the jewellery shop to get a few things fixed and do some shopping while the boys are fishing on the pier. When we meet them, Stuart is talking with a man from Shepparton, Tom Spark !! We laugh as wherever we go Stuart meets somebody he knows from Shepparton. The man next to us catches a nice queen fish. A shark is following it. We have lunch, go to the beach before getting ready to go crabbing ! Greg picks us up just before 4pm. He drives us in his ute (very fast on the track) to a river leading into the sea. On the way, I ask him my usual question : what is the situation with crocodiles ? “Well, this is crocodile territory so I cannot guarantee that there aren’t any but in this part of the river, it is very narrow and crocodiles do not like to be trapped like this. Usually, I take the dogs, but I didn’t today. There is a 4 metre crocodile further up the river. I will go first through the deep water.” As we get ready to get dirty, he hides the car keys and shows us the spot in case he gets taken by a crocodile… very reassuring ! We follow him through the deep narrow gully through mud among the mangroves. We have to look for large holes on the bank. He shows us how to get the hook into the hole and grab onto the crab. Sometimes it is too difficult to get the crab out and in the first few holes, we have no luck. Then he is onto a crab and gets a big one out after fighting with it for 15 minutes. He tears the big legs out first so that he does not get hurt. The crab still keeps walking… He sometimes has to climb through the mangrove roots to get to a hole. No way any of us are going to be able to do this ! He gives Jake and Emilie a go with the hook but this is definitely the job for an expert… We get another few crab. All together we have 4 nice crab to eat. I spend all my time watching out for crocodiles and making sure Greg walks first through the water… Soon the first star is out and it is time to go home. We wade our way back and get out of the river safe and sound. This was truly a Crocodile Dundee experience. We also learnt a lot about the local area as Greg is a teacher at a school in Broome and is able to answer our questions about Aboriginal children and families. We go home to have a shower and get rid of the mud and discover… we have been bitten by sandflies. What a price to pay !

Aujourd’hui, Emilie et moi allons à la bijouterie pour faire quelques réparations et faire des courses pendant que les hommes sont à la pêche sur la jetée. Quand on les retrouve, Stuart est en train de parler avec un homme de Shepparton, Tom Spark !! On rigole car chaque fois qu’on va quelque part, Stuart rencontre quelqu’un de Shepparton qu’il connait. L’homme à côté attrape un beau “queen fish”. Un requin le poursuit. On mange puis allons à la plage avant d’aller aux crabes ! Greg vient nous prendre avant 4 heures. Il nous emmène dans son “pick up” (très vite sur la piste) et nous emmène au bord d’une petite rivière qui se jette dans l’océan. En route, je lui pose ma question habituelle : quelle est la situation avec les crocodiles ici ? “ C’est un territoire à crocodiles donc je ne peux pas garantir qu’il n’y a pas de crocodiles mais dans cette section de la rivière, c’est très étroit et les crocodiles n’aiment pas se sentir piéger comme ça. D’habitude j’ammène les chiens mais aujourd’hui je ne les ai pas ammenés. Il y a un crocodile de 4 m plus loin dans la rivière. Dans les passages plus profonds, je passerai en premier.” Pendant qu’on s’organise pour la pêche, il cache les clés de la voiture et nous montre où elles sont au cas où il se ferait prendre par un crocodile… rassurant ! On le suit dans une petite rivière étroite dans la boue et les mangroves. On cherche des gros trous sur les côtés. Il nous montre comment mettre le crochet dans le trou pour accrocher le crabe. Quelquefois, c’est difficile d’attraper le crabe et les deux premiers trous, rien. Dans un autre trou, il essaie pendant une quinzaine de minutes et sort un beau crabe. Il lui arrache les grosses pinces tout de suite pour qu’il n’y ait pas d’accident. Le crabe continue à marcher. Greg doit quelquefois grimper dans les mangroves pour atteindre un trou. Il faut vraiment s’y connaitre ! On attrape deux autres crabes. En tout, on a 4 beaux crabes à manger. Je passe tout mon temps à surveiller les alentours pour les crocodiles et à m’assurer que Greg passe bien le premier dans l’eau. Bientôt on voit la première étoile, c’est l’heure de rentrer. On refait le chemin en sens inverse dans la rivière et on en sort, sains et saufs ! C’était une expérience digne de Crocodile Dundee ! On a aussi appris beaucoup de choses sur Broome car Greg est enseignant dans une école primaire et il a pu répondre à nos questions sur les enfants et familles aborigènes. On rentre et prenons une douche pour enlever la boue et on découvre qu’on a été piqués par des “sandflies”. Quel prix à payer !

Tuesday, 19 May - Day 51

Today, Jake and Emilie are catching up on their blog before going into town to the supermarket (Emilie and I) while the boys are fishing. They pick us up and we have a drink at a brewery before going home to a nice lunch of fresh mud crab. We spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach. Jake and Emilie build nice sand sculptures and we watch the sunset for the last time in Broome.

Aujourd’hui, Jake et Emilie font leur blog avant d’aller en ville pour faire les courses (Emilie et moi) pendant que les hommes sont à la pêche. Ils viennent nous récupérer et on va boire un coup dans une brasserie avant de rentrer pour manger… nos crabes. On va à la plage l’après-midi. Jake et Emilie font des sculptures de sables sur la plage et on regarde le coucher du soleil pour la dernière fois à Broome.

Wednesday, 20 May - Day 52

This morning I wake up grumpy as I hardly got any sleep with my bites… I have reacted badly and the antihistamines don’t seem to help very much. I am determined to get an injection. I drive to the hospital but realise I would be better going to the medical centre next door. I make an appointment for 9.30. We pack up and Stuart drops us off at the doctor’s (the kids are keen to go to as there is Wifi) while he goes and organises the extra spare wheel. The doctor cannot do much for me. I can take other antihistamine at night to help me sleep and put cortisone on my bites. He also checks Emilie’s tummy as she has been having pains. It appears it is muscular. We take some time to organise the wheel as the first shop did not have the right parts. We finally get going towards 80 mile beach. We arrive in time for sunset over the ocean. It is low tide and the beach is about one kilometre wide. Cars can drive on the beach.

Ce matin je me réveille de mauvaise humeur car je n’ai pas beaucoup dormi à cause de mes piqures… J’ai une réaction aux piqures et les antihistaminiques ne semblent pas avoir beaucoup d’effet. Je veux qu’on me fasse une piqure. Je vais à l’hôpital mais finalement je vois un centre médical à côté. Je prends rendez-vous pour 9h30. On range et Stuart nous dépose chez le docteur (les enfants veulent aussi y aller car il y a la Wifi) pendant qu’il va organiser l’autre roue de secours. Le docteur ne peut pas faire grand chose. Je peux seulement prendre d’autres antihistaminiques le soir pour m’aider à dormir et mettre un peu de cortisone sur mes 200 piqures ! Il regarde aussi le ventre d’Emilie car elle a des douleurs de temps en temps. Il dit que ce sont des douleurs musculaires. On met du temps à organiser la roue de secours car le premier magasin n’avait pas les bons boulons. Finalement, on se met en route vers “80 mile beach”. On arrive à temps pour voir le coucher du soleil sur l’océan. C’est marée basse et la plage s’étend sur au moins un kilomètre. Les voitures peuvent aller sur la plage.

Thursday, 21 May - Day 53

We are having a casual day today, fishing on the beach and collecting shells. There are so many nice shells on the beach. We have a go at fishing in the morning. A couple of little fish are caught but nothing to keep. In the afternoon, Jake and Emilie have a go at driving the car on the beach. They are happy !

Journée repos aujourd’hui. On pêche et ramassons des coquillages. Il y a tellement de beaux coquillages sur la plage. On pêche le matin. On attrape quelques petits poissons mais rien que l’on peut garder. L’après-midi, Jake et Emilie conduisent sur la plage. Ils sont contents !

Friday, 22 May - Day 54

We pack up early as we have a long drive ahead. First stop is Port Hedland to stock up on fuel, food and drinks. We are now entering a mining area and there are road trains everywhere, even railway tracks in the middle of nowhere. We nearly run over a goanna on the way. After our shopping, we have our lunchtime stop on the side of the road. The kids wave to the road trains who blow their horns. We have one more stop at a big roadhouse where about 8 or 10 roadtrains are parked. We quickly run back to our car before they start driving ! We make it into Karijini National Park and set up just before dark. We play cards at night. The game is becoming very competitive.

On remballe vite car aujourd’hui c’est une longue journée de conduite. On s’arrête d’abord à Port Hedland pour se ravitailler en essence, nourriture et boissons. On est maintenant dans une région minière et il y a des “road trains” partout, il y a même des voies de chemin de fer au milieu de nulle part. Après nos courses, on s’arrête au bord de la route pour notre pique-nique. Jake et Emilie font des signes aux chauffeurs pour qu’ils klaxonnent. On s’arrête à une station service pour faire une pause où il y a 8 ou 10 “road trains” qui sont garés. On se dépêche de monter dans la voiture avant qu’ils ne démarrent tous ! On arrive à Karijina National Park et nous installons juste avant la nuit. On joue aux cartes le soir. Le jeu devient de plus en plus compétitif.

Saturday, 23 May - Day 55

Unfortunately the weather is not great today but we cannot complain as it is our first rainy day since we left ! We went to the visitor information centre in the morning to get some information and look at their displays. We did the Dales Gorge walk. It was a very interesting walk with a few swimming spots. The kids and I swam in a pool along with a cormorant. We also had a look at Fern pool. On the way back, Emilie calls in at the host camp to ask for a brochure. She is taking very long so I go in to see what is happening… She is in deep conversation with a French couple, translating some important information to them. She is very proud !

Malheureusement, le temps n’est pas très beau aujourd’hui mais on ne peut pas se plaindre car c’est notre premier jour de pluie depuis notre départ ! Le matin, on est allés à l’office de tourisme pour se renseigner. On a fait une marche dans les gorges de Dales. C’était une marche intéressante avec plusieurs endroits où nager. Jake, Emilie et moi avons nagé dans un grand bassin avec un cormorant. On est aussi allés voir Fern pool. Au retour, Emilie est allée voir les “camp hosts” pour leur demander une brochure. Elle ne revient pas donc je vais voir ce qui se passe. .. Elle est en grande conversation avec un couple français, elle traduit toutes les informations importantes. Elle est très fière !

Sunday, 24 May - Day 56

We notice a leak in the caravan. One of the cushions is wet ! Not nice. We set off for the day today to do some walks at the other end of the park. We have to take a long bitumen road as the shortcut (a track) is closed due to the wet. We want to do the Kermitt Pool walk and start engaging in the gorge. We have to trade through water, carefully on the slippery rocks. Then, the few drops change to heavy rain and we decide that it is too dangerous. We turn back. We have been told that the water rises suddenly in the gorges and not to enter in case of heavy rain. We get back to the car park to have our lunch. There is a BBQ there and Jake and Emilie would like to have some sausages. The ranger cleans out the BBQ for us and we have a nice, hot lunch. In the afternoon, we do the gorge rim walk and see some amazing deep views of the gorges from the top. Again, we decide not to do a walk down into the gorge as we would have to swim through water and really, it is not warm enough !

On remarque une fuite dans la caravane. Un des coussins est mouillé. Mauvaise nouvelle. Aujourd’hui, on va faire des marches à l’autre bout du parc naturel. Il faut qu’on fasse un grand détour car le raccourci (une piste) est fermé à cause de la pluie. On veut faire la marche jusqu’à Kermit pool et commençons à nous engager dans les gorges. Il faut marcher dans l’eau et faire attention sur les pierres glissantes. Puis, les quelques gouttes de pluie se transforment en pluie battante et on décide que ça devient trop dangereux. On retourne. On nous a dit que l’eau monte rapidement dans les gorges et de ne pas s’engager en cas de forte pluie. On retourne sur le parking pour manger. Il y a un BBQ et Jake et Emilie veulent manger des saucisses. Le “ranger” nettoie le BBQ pour nous et on mange un bon repas chaud. L’après-midi, on marche le long des falaises et admirons les gorges très profondes du haut. De nouveau, on décide de ne pas s’engager pour faire une autre marche dans les gorges car il faut nager dans de l’eau profonde et il ne fait pas si chaud !

Monday, 25 May - Day 57

We are hoping the weather is going to improve as we need to dry a lot of things, including the caravan which was wet when we packed up. We stop at the visitor information centre as the kids have completed their booklet and are awarded a badge for their work : “Karijini Junior Ranger”. We have a stop at Paraburdoo to buy fuel and hoping to find a nice warm spot for lunch but there is not much there ! We find a nice spot by a river for lunch and try to stay warm while eating our picnic. We have decided on stopping at a roadhouse tonight (Nanaturra) so that we can hopefully dry out our things. We set up camp : it looks like a laundromat ! We are very glad it is not raining.

On espére que le temps va s’améliorer car il faut qu’on fasse sécher beaucoup de choses, y compris la caravane qui était mouillée quand on l’a pliée. On s’est arrêté à l’office de tourisme car les enfants avaient fini leur livret d’activités et doivent venir chercher leur badge de “Karijini Junior Ranger”. On s’est arrêté à Paraburdoo pour acheter de l’essence et dans l’espoir de manger dans un endroit chaud mais il n’y avait rien ! On a trouvé un bel endroit près d’une rivière pour manger en essayant de se réchauffer. Ce soir on a décidé de s’arrêter dans un terrain de camping attenant à une station service pour faire sécher nos affaires. On s’installe : notre campement ressemble à une laverie ! On est très content qu’il ne pleuve pas.

Tuesday, 26 May - Day 58

Today I check the pump in the caravan and it is not working. Last night we ran out of water in the tanks and are worried we have damaged the pump. So we decide that we will have to get it checked once we get into Exmouth. There is a caravan repair place in Exmouth. We go and explain our problem. We have to drive around to find the mechanic who is very helpful and has a look at our problem straight away. It is nothing major, the pump was just airlock. He shows us out to fix it. We are very happy and make our way to the town centre for some lunch. We have lunch at the bakery. We have a look around town and decide to book our whale shark tour for Sunday. We then do the shopping and drive out to the visitor centre. There is a note on the door : there is no more camping room in Cape Range National Park for tonight. So we decide to camp in a caravan park close to the entrance to the park for one night. We set up and Jake and Emilie have a swim in the pool. Later, Jake and I go for a walk and we see some wallabies. People have come back from fishing with a large Eski full of very big fish ! Jake is hopeful.

Aujourd’hui, je vérifie la pompe dans la caravane mais elle ne marche pas. Hier soir, la réserve d’eau était vide et on s’inquiète que la pompe ait marché à vide. Donc on décide de la faire vérifier en arrivant à Exmouth. On trouve un magasin de réparations pour caravanes à Exmouth. On explique notre problème. On doit aller trouver le mécanicien qui travaille sur une autre caravane, il est très sympa et s’occupe de notre problème tout de suite. Rien de grave, il y avait seulement de l’air dans le tuyau. On est très content et on va manger à la boulangerie. On fait un tour dans la ville et décidons de réserver notre plongée avec les requins baleines pour dimanche. On fait les courses, la lessive et nous dirigeons vers l’office de tourisme. Il y a un mot sur la porte : plus de place de camping dans le parc naturel pour ce soir. Donc on décide de camper dans un terrain de camping proche de l’entrée du parc naturel pour une nuit. On s’organise, Jake et Emilie vont dans la piscine. Plus tard, Jake et moi allons marcher et on voit des wallabies. Des gens sont rentrés de la pêche avec une glacière pleine d’énormes poissons ! Jake est plein d’espoir.

Wednesday, 27 May - Day 59

This morning, Stuart, Emilie and I drive to the ranger’s office just after 8am to make sure we can get into the park tonight. She is a very nice ranger and finds us a camping spot at Ned’s camping ground. We go to have a look. There is direct access to the beach. The camping site is not great but we are happy to have a spot ! We go back to the caravan park to pack up. On the way, we see a wild cat cross the road. We arrive at our new campsite and spend the morning getting organised and relaxing. After lunch, we go to the Ningaloo visitor centre who advises us to go and snorkel at Oyster Stacks. This is a rocky area and we have a few technical issues with masks and snorkels but there are so many different species of fish so close to the beach. It is amazing ! We come back for “Happy hour” with our fellow campers.

Ce matin, Stuart, Emilie et moi allons jusqu’au bureau du “ranger” juste après 8 heures pour être surs de pouvoir camper dans le parc naturel. La dame est très gentille et nous trouve un emplacement. On va voir. Il y a un accès direct à la plage. L’emplacement n’est pas super mais on est déjà content d’en avoir un ! On retourne au terrain de camping pour remballer. Sur le chemin du retour, on voit un chat sauvage traverser la route. On arrive à notre nouveau campement, nous installons et nous reposons. Après le repas, on va à l’office de tourisme de Ningaloo qui nous conseille d’aller plonger à Oyster Stacks. C’est un endroit avec beaucoup de rochers et on a quelques problèmes avec les masques et les tubas mais il y a tant de sortes de poissons si près du bord. C’est incroyable ! On rentre pour aller boire un coup avec nos voisins de camping.

Thursday, 28 May - Day 60

The kids are not keen to do a walk this morning so we spend some time at the beach here. They build a hut on the beach, I go for a walk and have a swim. In the afternoon, we drive to Turquoise Bay for a snorkel. First we snorkel in the bay but we cannot find many fish so Jake, Emilie and I try the “Drift”. It is hard work as the current pushes us North but there are a lot of fish here !.

Les enfants n’ont pas envie d’aller marcher ce matin donc on passe du temps à la plage près de la caravane. Ils construisent une hutte sur la plage. Je vais marcher et nager. L’après-midi, on va plonger à Turquoise Bay. D’abord, on nage dans la baie mais on ne voit pas beaucoup de poissons alors Jake, Emilie et moi essayons “le courant”. C’est difficile avec le courant qui nous pousse vers le nord mais il y a beaucoup de poissons ici !

Friday, 29 May - Day 61

This morning we go for a walk at Mandu Mandu gorge. We got some nice views of the lagoon from the top. We have a look around at Yardie creek and a few other campsites. In the afternoon, we went back to Turquoise Bay and have a snorkel in the drift. This time, Stuart’s snorkel is not working ! We are all enjoying snorkelling more and more and are getting more confident. On the way back, we hit a kangaroo. We turned back to see how it was. It stood on the road shocked but… hopped away ! We were very pleased.

Ce matin on va marcher dans la gorge de Mandu Mandu. On a une belle vue sur le lagon depuis le sommet. On va voir l’autre campement à Hardie Creek. L’après-midi, on est retourné à Turquoise Bay pour nager dans le courant. Cette fois, c’est le tuba de Stuart qui ne marche pas ! On se débrouille tous de mieux en mieux et on prend confiance. Sur le chemin du retour, on touche un kangourou. On fait demi-tour pour voir comment il va. Il était debout sur la route, sous le choc mais… est parti en sautant ! On était tous très content qu’il n’ait pas eu de mal !

Saturday, 30 May - Day 62

Today, we went to Oyster Stacks to have a snorkel at high tide. We came back to camp to have showers before driving to Exmouth to have some lunch and stock up on food, petrol and water. We also went to the information centre to find out about Coral Bay and use the Internet.

Aujourd’hui, on est retourné à Oyster Stacks pour plonger à marée haute. On est rentré à la caravane prendre une douche avant d’aller à Exmouth pour manger et faire le plein de nourriture, essence et eau. On est aussi allé à l’office du tourisme pour se renseigner sur Coral Bay et aller sur Internet.

Sunday, 31 May - Day 63

Today is our big day with the whale sharks. We are up and ready to go to the boat ramp at 8.45. We meet our group and are taken to our big boat, Latitude 22, on a small inflatable boat. The crew meet us and go through the safety requirements. They talk us through the facilities on the boat. It is a very nice and big boat. We have breakfast and get fitted with our snorkelling gear before going snorkelling. We see a crayfish hiding behind rocks. Some people have seen a reef shark. We are asked to go back to the boat but I didn’t hear ! I am second last on the boat. The snorkelling was very nice. We then are served some morning tea and are told that the spotter plane is looking for whale sharks and that it might take a while. We then hear that they have found a whale shark 20 minutes away. We are making our way to the whale shark and are taken through the steps. 5 minutes before going in, they will ask us to get ready with wetsuits on. 2 minutes before, we will have to be sitting on the back of the boat, ready to jump in. We get the first call. We (or maybe just I) are very nervous ! Everyone is trying to do the right thing. The photographer jumps in first, then our guide who quickly asks us to jump in. The 10 of us have to make a straight line and wait for the signal to put our heads in. Here it comes, heads in ! It all goes very quickly, I saw a massive fish / spotty whale swimming past us. Most of us don’t move and miss the opportunity to swim alongside it ! We go back on the back on the boat and are going to get a second chance. This time, I get to swim right alongside its gills, it is amazing, so big and smooth through the water ! All the nerves are gone, this is just a magnificent experience. We get to repeat the swims 7 times, with 4 different whale sharks. One time, our guide has spotted a white tipped shark coming up to the surface for a look. One time, I had real trouble keeping up with the whale shark, either it was swimming faster or I was getting tired… We have a well deserved lunch and rest after our swims before cruising back to the boat ramp. We are exhausted. What a day !

Aujourd’hui, c’est notre grande journée avec les requins-baleines. On est prêt pour aller prendre le bateau à 8h45. On retrouve le groupe au port et on prend un petit bateau gonflable pour aller sur notre bateau, Latitude 22. On rencontre les membres de l’équipage qui nous expliquent les consignes de sécurité. Ils nous expliquent aussi le fonctionnement du bateau. C’est un très grand et beau bateau. On prend le petit déjeuner et organisons notre matériel avant d’aller plonger dans le corail. On a vu une langouste dans les rochers. Certaines personnes ont vu un petit requin. On nous a demandé de retourner sur le bateau mais je n’ai pas entendu ! Je suis l’avant-dernière à remonter sur le bateau. C’était vraiment très beau. On nous sert un petit gouter et l’èquipage nous informe que l’avion survole la zone pour trouver des requins-baleines et que ça pourrait prendre un moment. Ils viennent nous dire qu’ils en ont trouvé un à 20 minutes d’ici. On se met en route et ils nous donnent les dernières consignes. 5 minutes avant d’entrer dans l’eau, il faudra se préparer avec combinaison… 2 minutes avant, il faudra être assis à l’arrière du bateau, prêts à sauter. Premier appel. Nous (ou peut être juste moi !) sommes très nerveux ! Tout le monde essaie de suivre les consignes. La photographe saute en premier, puis notre guide qui nous demande de sauter aussi. Il faut que tous les 10, nous fassions une ligne et que nous attendions le signal du guide pour mettre la tête dans l’eau. Ca y est, tête dans l’eau ! Ca va très vite, j’ai vu une grosse masse tachetée passer devant nous. Tout le monde reste cloué sur place et nous manquons l’opportunité de nager avec le requin-baleine. On remonte sur le bateau, on va avoir une deuxième chance. Cette fois, j’arrive à nager juste à côté, c’est incroyable, cette bête énorme qui nage avec autant de grâce. Je n’ai plus peur, c’est une expérience magnifique. On recommence à plonger 7 fois avec 4 requins-baleines différents. Une fois, notre guide a vu un petit requin qui est venu à la surface voir ce qui se passait. Une fois, j’ai vraiment eu du mal à suivre le requin-baleine, je ne sais pas s’il nageait plus vite que les autres ou si je fatiguais…On mange au buffet sur le bateau et on se repose avant de rentrer vers le port. On est crevé. Quelle journée !

Monday, 1 June - Day 64

Today, we are still tired from our whale shark experience ! We want to go and snorkel at Oyster Stacks for the last time. On the car park, there is a family of emus. We have a nice snorkel and a quiet afternoon with some fishing on the cards but nothing…

Aujourd’hui, on est encore fatigué de notre expérience avec les requins-baleines ! On veut aller plonger à Oyster Stacks pour la dernière fois. Sur le parking, il y a une famille d’émeus. On profite de la plongée puis nous reposons l’après-midi en pêchant.

Tuesday, 2 June - Day 65

Today we are leaving for Coral Bay. We have to go via Exmouth to pick up our mail and do some shopping but the mail will probably not arrive before the end of the week ! Never mind we will get it sent on to the next place with a post office. After lunch we drive to Coral Bay and book in to the caravan park. The is a very nice bay full of coral, the caravan park is straight across from the beach.

Aujourd’hui, on roule vers Coral Bay. On passe par Exmouth pour prendre notre courrier et faire les courses mais le courrier ne vas sans doute pas arriver avant la fin de la semaine ! Tant pis, on leur demandera de renvoyer notre courrier à la prochaine ville qui a une poste. Après manger, on se dirige vers Coral Bay et on s’installe dans un terrain de camping. C’est une très jolie baie pleine de corail, le terrain de camping est juste en face de la plage.

Wednesday, 3 June - Day 66

This is our first day at Coral Bay so we went down to the beach to go snorkelling in the bay. The coral is great : there are huge leaves like cabbage leaves under water. After lunch, we went back to the beach to watch the fish feeding. Huge fish come up to the beach for people to hand them pellets ; they swim around people’s legs and fight for the food ! While Jake was back snorkelling, a dolphin swam around him.

C’est notre premier jour à Coral Bay, alors on est allé plonger dans la baie. Le corail est impressionnant : il y a d’énormes feuilles comme des grosses feuilles de choux sous l’eau. Après manger, on est allé à la plage pour voir le “ranger” donner à manger aux poissons. Il donne de la nourriture aux gens qui peuvent la mettre dans l’eau pour que d’énormes poissons la mangent : ils nagent autour des jambes des gens et se battent pour la nourriture ! Pendant que Jake nageait dans le corail pour une deuxième fois, un dauphin a sauté près de lui.

Thursday, 4 June - Day 67

Today we went snorkelling around the corner from the point. The snorkelling was better. After lunch it was homework time before going out for dinner for Stuart’s birthday. For the occasion, Stuart shaved his beard off.

Aujourd’hui, on est allé plonger plus loin à la pointe. Il y avait plus de poissons. Après manger, devoirs avant de sortir au restaurant pour l’anniversaire de Stuart. Pour l’occasion, Stuart a rasé sa barbe.

Friday, 5 June - Day 68

Today we were trying to drive to Five Finger Reef which is a good snorkelling spot. Jake got a spear and is keen to use it as he is allowed to spear fish there. We have to go on a 4x4 track on the dunes which is not clearly marked on the map. We had a lot of trouble finding our way and finally got at the top of a dune. The kids and I walked and checked out the beach but we were not so sure. So we decided to go home. Jake and I went for a walk to a look out. Then in the afternoon we went for a snorkel. The kids went for a swim in the pool.

Aujourd’hui, on essaie de trouvé une autre barrière de corail pour plonger. On a acheté un harpon à Jake et il veut l’utiliser là-bas car c’est autorisé. Il faut prendre une piste dans les dunes qui n’est pas très bien marquée sur la carte. On a eu beaucoup de mal à se retrouver et finalement on arrive au sommet d’une dune. Les enfants et moi sommes descendus jusqu’à la plage pour voir mais on n’est pas sur que ce soit là. Alors on est rentré au camping. Jake et moi avons marché jusqu’à un point de vue. Puis l’après-midi, on est allé plonger. Les enfants sont aussi allés nager dans la piscine.

Saturday, 6 June - Day 69

Today we had a relaxing morning around the caravan. In the afternoon, with better directions, we manage to find Five Finger Reef. There is one other car on the beach who ends up leaving soon after. We select a bay surrounded with coral to go for a snorkel. Jake, with his spear, jumps in first. Stuart decides to stay on the beach to watch Jake. I get ready and go in the water to go with Jake. It is quite choppy and all I can see in my mask is sand. I get cold feet and get out. Stuart goes in and joins Jake. Then Emilie decides to go in. They all seem to be having a good time. Jake stays in for a long time hoping to catch a fish and gets to swim with a turtle.. He is very happy. We go and have a drink at the pub across the road from the caravan park and watch the sunset.

Aujourd’hui, c’était matinée relax à la caravane. L’après-midi, avec des directions plus détaillées, on arrive à trouver la barrière de corail. Il y a une autre voiture sur la plage qui s’en va peu de temps après notre arrivée. On sélectionne un endroit protégé pour plonger. Jake, avec son harpon, se lance en premier. Stuart décide de rester sur la plage pour surveiller Jake. Je me prépare à aller retrouver Jake. Il y a pas mal de petites vagues et tout ce que je vois dans mon masque, c’est du sable. J’ai peur et je ressors. Stuart va retrouver Jake. Puis Emilie décide d’y aller. Ils semblent bien s’amuser. Jake reste longtemps car il veut attraper un poisson. Il est content, il a vu une tortue. En rentrant, on va boire un coup au pub en face du terrain de camping et on regarde le coucher du soleil.

Sunday, 7 June - Day 70

Today, we went down to the jetty for a fish. It was fun because we could see so many fish including a big parrot fish. After lunch, we went to have a look at Maud’s Landing but decided it was too rough to either snorkel or fish. We came back and had a snorkel at Coral Bay. Jake and Emilie also had a swim in the pool.

Aujourd’hui, on est allé pêcher depuis la jetée. C’était bien parce qu’on pouvait voir beaucoup de poissons, même un poisson-perroquet. Après manger, on va voir une autre plage mais il y a trop de vagues pour plonger ou pêcher. On est de nouveau allé plonger à Coral Bay. Jake et Emilie ont aussi profité de la piscine.

Monday, 8 June - Day 71

We are off towards Canarvon today. We needed to buy some food, petrol. and fishing tackle. We were also looking for fresh seafood which we found on the harbour. We had lunch in a café near the one mile jetty. We did not walk on the jetty as they charge $ 5 per person ! After refuelling we set off on our way towards Quobba station. On the way, we stopped at the Blowholes. They were working well and we even got a bit wet ! We arrived at the station and were very disappointed when the man told us we could not camp on the beach. We had been told we could camp right on the beach… Wrong information ! We could have gone and camped somewhere else but did not have enough water in the tanks so decided to stay at the station and make the best of it. We went for a walk on the beach and picked up some shells. The ocean was rough but it was very nice with high rugged cliffs.

On se dirige vers Canarvon aujourd’hui. On a besoin d’acheter à manger, de l’essence et des apâts pour la pêche. On cherche aussi des fruits de mer sur le port. On a mangé dans un café près de la jetée, longue d’un kilomètre et demi. On n’est pas allé sur la jetée car ça coûtait 5$ par personne ! Après manger, on se met en route vers le ranch de Quobba. En route, on s’arrête pour voir la côte. On se fait mouiller par les vagues. On arrive au ranch et sommes très déçu quand le propriétaire nous dit qu’on ne peut pas camper sur la plage. Quelqu’un nous avait dit qu’on pouvait camper sur la plage… Mauvais renseignements ! On aurait pu aller camper ailleurs mais n’avions pas assez d’eau dans les réserves donc on a décidé de rester au ranch et d’en profiter au maximum. On est allé sur la plage et avons ramassé des coquillages. Il y avait de grosses vagues et de hautes falaises.

Tuesday, 9 June - Day 72

Today, Stuart and Jake tried and fished from the rocks but it was very difficult with the swell. On the way, we talk to some guys who are ballooning and have got a big Spanish mackerel. Then we drove to a snorkelling spot near the blowholes. The place looked like a slum as there used to be shacks / caravans which had been destroyed by a cyclone in March. The beach looked lovely though and we went snorkelling. It was hard work because the water was not very deep but the snorkelling was great. Later, Stuart and Jake tried to catch some squid up a bit further and saw a shark. Better fishing than snorkelling ! Later that night we went back to that beach to have a fish. Jake excitedly shouted : “ I have a fish!”. It was a nice dart that we kept. Emilie also caught a fish, a spangled emperor, but too small to keep. It was a good fishing night !

Aujourd’hui Stuart et Jake ont essayé de pêcher depuis les rochers mais c’était très difficile avec les vagues. Sur la route, on parle à des pêcheurs qui font de la pêche “au ballon” et ont attrapé un énorme maquereau. Puis on fait route vers un endroit pour plonger. C’est un endroit qui ressemble à un bidonville car il y a eu un cyclone en mars qui a détruit toutes les caravanes / cabanes qui étaient là. Mais la plage est très jolie et on a fait de la plongée. C’était difficile car l’eau n’était pas très profonde mais il y avait beaucoup de poissons. Un peu plus tard, Stuart et Jake ont essayé d’attraper des calamars un peu plus loin et ont vu un requin. Heureusement qu’ils l’ont vu en pêchant, pas en plongeant ! Le soir, on est retourné pêcher là. Jake a enfin crié : “ J’ai un poisson !” C’était une jolie “dart” que nous avons gardée. Emilie a aussi attrapé un poisson qui était trop petit pour garder. C’était une bonne soirée de pêche !

Wednesday, 10 June - Day 73

We have decided to stay an extra night on the station so that we can drive out North to Gnarloo beach. This is about 90 kms on a main track. First we stop at 17 mile beach. We have to go down towards the beach on a very small 4x4 track but cannot find our way to the beach. So we stop and walk through the sand dunes. We get to the beach, They mine salt nearby and we can see a big salt hill on the cape. Boats must come and collect it from here. Once again the coastline is too rugged for fishing. We then stopped at Red Bluff which is supposed to be a good surfing spot. This was very remote with a few people camping in the dunes facing the beach. There was no big surf that day. We had a walk on the beach and continued on. We arrived at Gnarloo beach which was a postcard picture : white sandy beach, blue water and only a couple of people on the beach. We had our lunch. Then Jake wanted to go spear fishing out of the marine reserve. He went in but could not find any fish so we all went snorkelling in the marine reserve. We just had to be taken along by the current, there were many fish there and the coral was quite different from the other places. We got back in time to go for a fish near the Blow holes but did not catch any fish. We ate the dart, which was very nice.

On a décidé de rester une nuit supplémentaire dans le ranch pour qu’on puisse passer la journée plus au nord dans un autre ranch. C’est à environ 90 kilomètres de piste. D’abord, on s’arrête à une plage. On essaie d’atteindre la plage en passant par une petite piste étroite mais n’y arrivons pas. Donc on s’arrête et marchons à travers les dunes de sable. On arrive à la plage. Ils extraient du sel pas très loin d’ici et on peut voir une “dune” de sel sur la pointe. Des bateaux doivent venir le récupérer ici. De nouveau, la côte est trop découpée pour la pêche. Puis on s’arrête à Red Bluff, un endroit connu des surfers. C’est un endroit très isolé avec quelques campeurs dans les dunes en face de la plage. Il n’y avait pas de vagues le jour-là. On a marché sur la plage et avons continué notre route. On est arrivé à la plage de Gnarloo qui était une plage de carte postale : du sable blanc, de l’eau bleue et seulement deux personnes sur la plage. On a mangé sur la plage. Puis Jake a voulu aller pêcher avec son harpon en dehors de la réserve naturelle. Il y est allé mais n’a pas vu de poissons donc on est tous allé plonger. Il fallait se laisser porter par le courant, il y avait beaucoup de poissons et le corail était assez différent des autres endroits. On est rentré avec assez de jour restant pour aller à la pêche mais n’avons rien attrapé. On a mangé la “dart” qui était très bonne.

Thursday, 11 June - Day 74

Today we are heading towards Shark Bay, a World Heritage area and more specifically Denham. On the way we stopped at the Hamelin pool for lunch and to have a look at the Stromatolites or “living rocks”. Jake and Emilie were not impressed as we just looked at rocks in the water that grow very very slowly !! We then briefly stopped at Shell beach. We could see a quarry nearby. Some of the buildings are made up of shells at Denham. We then decided to make our way straight to Denham to find a caravan park. We went to a first caravan park which was full, then had a look at a second one. By closer inspection, we found out it was very rough and would be quite noisy. So we went to the third and last one which had some vacancies. It is not very pleasant but we had no choice. Jake and Emilie had a quick swim in the pool before deciding they wanted to go fishing from the pier! It was nearly dark by the time we got there but Emilie caught a nice barracuda. We could see the fish swimming under the pier and jumping everywhere in the distance.

Aujourd’hui, on se dirige vers Shark Bay, un site classé au patrimoine naturel mondial, plus particulièrement vers la ville de Denham. En route, on s’arrête pour pique-niquer à Hamelin Pool et pour voir les Stromatolites ou “pierres vivantes”. Jake et Emilie n’ont pas beaucoup apprécié de regarder des rochers dans l’eau qui “grossissent” très très lentement !! On s’est arrêté à Shell Beach pour voir une carrière de coquillage. Certains bâtiments de Dunham sont construits avec des coquillages. Puis on a décidé d’aller directement à Dunham dans un terrain de camping. Le premier terrain était complet alors on est allé en visiter un deuxième. Il n’était pas très avenant et pourrait être assez bruyant. Donc, on est allé dans le troisième et dernier, qui avait des places. Il n’était pas très agréable mais nous n’avions pas le choix. Jake et Emilie sont allés dans la piscine avant de décider qu’ils voulaient aller à la pêche sur la jetée ! Il faisait presque nuit quand nous sommes arrivés à la jetée mais Emilie a attrapé un beau “barracuda”. On voyait les poissons sous la jetée et beaucoup de poissons sauter au loin.

Friday, 12 June - Day 75

Jake and Emilie wanted to go fishing early this morning after last nice successful experience. They were going to walk down but Stuart drove them to the pier and ended up staying with them. They tried hard but got nothing despite seeing

fish everywhere. We got ready to have a look at the town. We collected our mail from the PO, finally ! visited the tourist information centre and found a fresh fish shop where we bought whiting (the local industry) and scallops. We did our shopping at the supermarket and went home for lunch. After lunch, Jake and Emilie were keen to visit Ocean World so we drove down and had a guided tour. We saw some displays of the local fish in Shark Bay and learnt that it was called Shark Bay … because of the number of sharks, more specifically nervous and lemon sharks (harmless) and tiger sharks (dangerous !) The tour was run by a marine biologist and we could ask any question we wanted so it was most informative. We saw starfish, Moray eels, stone fish, turtles, rays, water snakes and sharks. We learnt that stone fish are present in big numbers in Shark Bay and that they hurt a lot so decided to only go in the water with flippers or shoes ! The weather is still pleasant but not as warm. Nights especially are starting to get cold. We then drove to Eagle Bluff lookout in the hope of spotting some wildlife but could only see birds. We had another go at fishing that night. We ate Emilie’s barracuda which was also very nice.

Jake et Emilie voulaient aller à la pêche tôt ce matin après leur expérience de la veille. Ils allaient y aller à pied mais Stuart les a conduit à la jetée et est resté avec eux. Ils ont pêché un moment mais sans succès malgré tous les poissons qu’ils voyaient sauter. On s’est préparé pour aller en ville. Nous avons été chercher notre courrier à la poste, enfin ! sommes allés à l’office de tourisme et avons trouvé une poissonnerie où on a acheté du poisson local et des coquilles saint jacques. On a fait les courses au supermarché et sommes rentrés à la caravane pour manger. Après manger, Jake et Emilie voulaient visiter un aquarium donc on a fait la visite guidée. On a vu des aquariums avec des poissons de la baie et avons compris que ça s’appelle Shark Bay … à cause du nombre de requins ! La visite était faite par un spécialiste des océans et on pouvait lui poser toutes les questions qu’on voulait, c’était donc très intéressant. On a vu des étoiles de mer, des anguilles, des “poissons-pierres”, des tortues, des raies, des serpents de mer et des requins. On a appris qu’il y avait beaucoup de “poissons-pierres” à Shark Bay et que leur venin fait extrêmement souffrir donc on a décidé d’aller toujours dans l’eau avec des palmes ou des chaussures ! Le temps est toujours agréable mais beaucoup moins chaud. Les nuits, en particulier, commencent à être froides. Puis on est allé à un point de vue dans l’espoir de voir des animaux marins mais n’avons vu que des oiseaux. On est encore allé à la pêche ce soir-là. On a mangé le barracuda d’Emilie qui était aussi très bon.

Saturday, 13 June - Day 76

This morning, we had to get up early to drive to Monkey Mia (half an hour away) to see the dolphins who visit the beach at 7.45. We arrived and some dolphins were already swimming in the shallows. The ranger explained to us the rules of interacting with the dolphins and what was going to happen next. They only feed five dolphins up to 3 times daily. The dolphins seemed very relaxed and came very close to the shore. We then went to have coffees and hot chocolates at the resort and heard that the dolphins were back. We went back and Emilie got to feed a fish to a dolphin. We had a look around the resort before going on a short walk in the bush. On the way back, we saw a couple of dolphins swimming side by side in the shallows. As we were watching the dolphins from the jetty, we saw a couple of turtles swimming around. We went back home for lunch and had a nice quiet afternoon. We decided to go to the pub for a drink. Jake and Emilie really wanted to have dinner there and they managed to convince us.

Ce matin, on s’est levé tôt pour aller à Monkey Mia (à une demi-heure d’ici) pour voir les dauphins qui visitent la plage à 7h45. On est arrivé et il y a déjà des dauphins qui nagent près du bord. Le “ranger” nous a expliqué les règles pour l’interaction avec les dauphins et ce qui allait se passer. Ils donnent à manger à 3 dauphins seulement, jusqu’à 3 fois par jour. Les dauphins ne semblaient pas avoir peur et sont venus très près du bord. Ensuite, on est allé prendre des cafés et chocolats chauds à l’hôtel et avons entendu que les dauphins étaient revenus ! On est allé voir et Emilie a donné un poisson à un dauphin. On s’est promené dans le complexe hôtelier avant d’aller faire une petite marche dans le bush. Au retour, on a vu deux dauphins nager près du bord. Pendant qu’on regardait les dauphins depuis la jetée, on a vu deux tortues. On est rentré pour manger et avons passer l’après-midi à la caravane. On a décidé d’aller au pub pour boire un verre. Jake et Emilie voulaient vraiment manger au pub et ils ont réussi à nous convaincre.

Sunday, 14 June - Day 77

Today we are driving up to François Peron National Park. We first stopped at the Homestead to have a walk around the farm which used to be a sheep station. Then we had to deflate our tyres as the rest of the drive (50 kms) is on a sandy track. The drive was not easy and we nearly got bogged at one stage. We had a first stop at Herald Bight, a nice, nearly deserted beach. We then stopped at the Gregories as we were told it was a nice spot for snorkelling. We had lunch on the beach and saw another couple of people fishing there. Jake went off spear fishing while Stuart organised the fishing rods. Jake stayed in a long time in the hope of spearing his first fish but he got very cold. The rest of us were not keen to get in the water as it was quite cold. Emilie was first to catch a nice whiting. Then the fish got on the bite and everyone got to catch a fish. In total we got 5 whiting and 7 big flathead. Finally, a successful fishing trip ! Jake went back in spearing and suddenly signalled to us that he had caught a fish. We kept asking :”where is the fish ?” and could not see the fish. When he came out of the water, we saw a tiny fish at the end of his spear ! He was very happy to have speared his first fish. He later speared a bigger one (but still small). While he was in the water, we saw a pod of dolphins swimming around. We also went to have a look at Cape Peron and Skipjack point lookouts. We saw a lot of cormorants. We made it back to the Homestead just at sunset and had a nice relax in a hot spring tub (40 degrees) before driving back to the caravan park.

Aujourd’hui, on va dans le parc naturel François Péron. D’abord, on s’est arrêté au ranch pour nous promener dans les bâtiments qui étaient utilisés comme bergerie dans le temps. Ensuite, il a fallu dégonflé nos pneus pour le reste de la route (50 kms) sur une piste sablonneuse. La route était assez difficile et on s’est presque ensablé sur une plage. D’abord, on s’est arrêté sur une jolie plage presque déserte. Puis on s’est arrêté aux “Gregories”, une bel endroit pour longer. On a mangé notre pique-nique sur la plage et avons vu des gens qui pêchaient là. Jake est parti pêcher au harpon pendant que Stuart préparait les cannes à pêche. Jake est resté très longtemps dans l’eau dans l’espoir d’attraper son premier poisson mais il a eu très froid. Emilie a été la première à attraper un “whiting”. Puis, tout d’un coup, ça mordait beaucoup et tout le monde a attrapé un poisson. En tout, nous avons attrapé 5 “whiting” et 7 gros “flathead”. Enfin, une pêche réussie ! Jake est retourné dans l’eau avec son harpon et nous a soudain montré qu’il avait un poisson. On a demandé : “où est le poisson ?” car on n’arrivait pas à voir le poisson. Quand il est sorti de l’eau, on a vu un minuscule poisson au bout de son harpon ! Il était très content d’avoir attrapé son premier poisson. Plus tard, il en a attrapé un plus gros ( mais encore très petit). Pendant qu’il était dans l’eau, on a vu des dauphins. On est aussi allé jusqu’au cap et à un autre point de vue. On a vu beaucoup de cormorants. On est arrivé au ranch à la tombée du jour et nous sommes reposés dans un bassin d’eau de source à 40 degrés avant de rentrer au camping.

Monday, 15 June - Day 78

Today we are on our way to Kalbarri. On the way we stop for lunch at a roadside stop and are welcome by thousands of flies ! Not a pleasant lunch. We drive into the town of Kalbarri to buy a few supplies. This is a nice seaside town with boats and canoes for hire in the harbour. We then have to decide whether to camp at a ranch or a station. Horse riding sounds good at the ranch. We have a look but the camping area is not very nice. We drive up to the station which is on the Murchison river which does sound nice and decide to stay there. We find a really nice spot on the bank of the river where we can fish from. There is also a rope in a tree which Jake and Emilie use as a swing. This is a very pleasant spot and we have a fire at night.

Aujourd’hui, on se dirige vers Kalbarri. En route, on s’arrête pour pique-niquer et sommes accueillis par des milliers de mouches ! C’était un arrêt désagréable. On va au centre de Kalbarri pour se ravitailler. C’est une jolie petite ville avec des bâteaux et kayak à louer dans le port. Puis, il faut qu’on décide dans quel ranch nous allons camper. Le premier a l’air intéressant car on peut faire du cheval. On visite mais l’endroit pour camper n’est pas très agréable. On va voir l’autre ranch près d’une rivière où on peut pêcher et décidons de nous installer là. On a trouver un bel emplacement au bord de la rivière où on peut pêcher. Il y a aussi une corde dans un arbre que Jake et Emilie utilisent comme balançoire. C’est un endroit très agréable et on fait un feu ce soir-là.

Tuesday, 16 June - Day 79

Today, we go back into town as Jake and Emilie are keen to have a look at the shops. We also check out the Blue Holes, a snorkelling area and Jake’s point, a surf break. We decide to go home for lunch and come back in the afternoon. When we arrive at Blue Holes, it is low tide and not really suitable for snorkelling. Chinaman’s beach is a spot where Jake could spearfish but the weather is changing and the water is murky, not great. There is no surf at the surf beach. We go to the harbour to have a look at the charter coming back and their fish and lobster. Emilie is walking with my hat on and does not see a sign. She walks straight through it … a loud noise, some tears and a looming bump on her head ! We then decide to go home, have a fish in the river and organise the fire so that Jake and Emilie can cook some damper.

Aujourd’hui, on retourne en ville car Jake et Emilie veulent aller voir les quelques magasins. On va voir un endroit pour plonger et une plage de surf. On décide de rentrer manger à la caravane et de revenir l’après-midi. Quand on arrive à la plage pour plonger, c’est marée basse et on ne peut plus plonger. On essaie une autre plage où Jake pourrait pêcher au harpon mais le temps est en train de changer et l’eau est trouble, pas super. Il n’y a pas de vagues à la plage de surf. On va au port voir le bateau de pêche qui rentre avec son poisson et langoustes. Emilie a mon chapeau sur la tête et ne voit pas une pancarte. Elle fonce dedans… gros bruit, des larmes et une bosse sur la tête ! Puis on décide de rentrer, de pêcher dans la rivière et de faire du feu pour que Jake et Emilie puissent faire cuire du pain.

Wednesday, 17 June - Day 80

It has rained all night and there is no rush to get up today ! The rain does not ease all morning. Jake and Emilie played Monopoly on their computer and Stuart and I did crosswords. We meant to have a look at the National Park today but there is no point in this rain. We are worried about getting bogged in our camping spot as it is getting very muddy. We decide to go to town for lunch and check out the weather. We have lunch at the pub. The weather is not going to be nice in the next few days… more rain to come. So we decide that we will go to Perth tomorrow (we are 600 kms away) and come back to the coast when the weather improves. We feel that there are more things we can do in Perth in the wet weather. We drive along the coast to the National Park cliffs but it is very windy and unpleasant even though the rain has stopped ! We go home and Stuart manages to build the fire despite the damp wood.

Il a plu toute la nuit, on reste au lit ce matin ! La pluie continue toute la matinée. Jake et Emilie ont joué au Monopoly sur leur ordinateur et Stuart et moi avons fait des mots croisés. On voulait aller faire de la marche dans le parc naturel aujourd’hui mais avec cette pluie on renonce. On s’inquiète à cause de la boue, on a peur de s’embourber avec la caravane et de ne pas pouvoir sortir de notre emplacement. On décide d’aller manger en ville et de s’informer sur les prévisions météo. On mange au pub. Il ne va pas faire beau pendant plusieurs jours… encore de la pluie. Donc on décide que demain on ira à Perth (on est à 600 kms de Perth) et on reviendra sur la côte quand il fera meilleur. On pense qu’il y aura plus de choses à faire à Perth quand il pleut. On va se promener le long des falaises du parc naturel mais il y a beaucoup de vent et ce n’est pas agréable, même si la pluie a cessé !
